Saint Nicholas, Myra Ancient City and Lycian Civilizations Museum Cultural Tour

The Lycian League tour centered around Myra and Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) is a route delving into the depths of history, rich both spiritually and archaeologically. This tour program, concentrated in the Demre (Kale) district on Antalya’s western coast, generally includes the following stops.

Stop 1: Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) Church

It is one of the most important spiritual stops of the tour. It is where Saint Nicholas, known as Santa Claus, served as a bishop and was buried.

Architecture: The church, dating from the Byzantine period, was eventually buried under alluvial deposits but was brought to light through excavations.

Significance: It is a pilgrimage center for the Christian world. The frescoes and sarcophagi inside are well worth seeing.

Stop 2: Ancient City of Myra

Myra, one of the six major cities of the Lycian Federation, is famous for its rock tombs and theater.

Rock Tombs: These house-shaped tombs carved into the mountainside represent the pinnacle of Lycian art. They were built in high places based on the belief that the dead would be closer to the sky.

Ancient Theater: Dating from the Roman period, it is one of the best-preserved and largest theaters in the region. Its stonework, decorated with mask reliefs, is particularly striking.

Stop 3: Andriake Harbor and Museum of Lycian Civilizations

Andriake, the port area of Myra, was the heart of trade in ancient times.

Granarium (Granary): This enormous structure, dating from the reign of Hadrian, now serves as the Museum of Lycian Civilizations.

Exhibition: Artifacts brought from cities such as Patara, Xanthos, and Tlos, which were part of the Lycian Federation, are exhibited here.

08:30 – 10:00: Hotel pickup and arrival in Demre via the coastal road amid natural beauty

10:00 – 11:30: Visit to Saint Nicholas Church and guided tour

11:30 – 13:00: Tour of the Ancient City of Myra (Tombs and Theater)

13:00 – 14:00: Lunch at a local restaurant (usually fresh seafood or regional dishes)

14:00 – 15:30: Andriake Museum

16:00 – 17:30: Return journey

Important Notes

Clothing: Clothing that covers the shoulders and knees (in some areas) should be preferred for church visits.

Museum Card: Since most sites are affiliated with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a Museum Card can be a lifesaver.

Weather: If you are visiting in the summer, do not forget to bring a hat and sunscreen, as the region can be very hot.
