This route begins at the political capital of the Lycian Federation, progresses into the heart of nature, and concludes at one of the world’s oldest council buildings and a magnificent sandy beach. It is one of the region’s most popular tour programs and is commonly known as the “3 in 1” tour.
1st Stop: Xanthos Ancient City (Capital of Lycia)
Our first stop is Xanthos, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and also known as the “City of Sorrows.”
Xanthos was the administrative and religious center of the Lycian Federation. It is famous for its tragic history, as it is said that its people chose mass suicide twice rather than surrender.
Harpy Tomb (the original is in the British Museum)
Lycian columned tombs
Ancient theater
Basilica ruins decorated with mosaics.
After history, it’s time for nature. Saklıkent Canyon offers an unforgettable experience between towering rock walls and ice-cold waters.
Canyon walk: Walk through the first sections of this 11-mile-long canyon, passing through refreshingly cold water.
For those seeking more adrenaline, activities such as inflatable boat rides (inflatable boat swimming) or ziplining may be available near the canyon exit.
Lunch: Lunch is usually served on wooden platforms built over the river, where you can enjoy trout or local appetizers accompanied by the coolness of the water.
The final section takes place in Patara, combining history and pure relaxation.
One of the world’s oldest council buildings: The restored Council Hall (Bouleuterion), the democratic center of the Lycian Federation, is a must-see.
Sea and sand dunes: After visiting the site, enjoy swimming at Patara’s 12 km long endless beach.
Sunset (if timing allows):
If your schedule permits, watching the sunset from Patara’s famous sand dunes makes the day unforgettable. (Some classic Turkish cinema desert scenes were filmed here.)
